AgricultureNews24.com

Duck Egg Markets: How Much Does the Price Rise from Farm to Consumer?

A Research-Based Report by Dr. Bayezid Moral
Dr. Bayezid Moral | Editor, AgricultureNews24.com

When duck egg prices rise, consumers pay more. But how much of that additional money reaches the farmer? Does the person who bought the ducklings, fed the flock every day, and carried the risks of disease and mortality receive a fair price? Or does the retail price increase while the producer’s earnings remain unchanged?

Answering these questions requires more than checking the price at a shop. We need to know how much the farmer received for eggs of the same size and quality, how much the collector paid, what happened at the wholesale market, and how much the consumer eventually paid. Transport, labour, breakage, shop rent, and other expenses must also be counted at each stage.

The entire difference between farm and retail prices is not a trader’s profit. Equally, the existence of marketing costs does not make every price difference reasonable. Both points matter when examining the duck egg market.

This report draws on published news reports and research, alongside clearly identified illustrative calculations. The example prices are not current national market rates.

What Do Published Reports Show?

Reports from different parts of Bangladesh reveal considerable variation in duck egg prices. However, they cover different periods and markets. They cannot be combined to calculate the price increase along a single supply chain.

A Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report published on 30 October 2025 stated that duck eggs at the Mohanganj market in Netrokona fluctuated between Tk 1,200 and Tk 1,500 per 100 eggs—equivalent to Tk 12–15 each. Traders purchased eggs there for distribution to Mymensingh, Dhaka, and other areas. These were prices at a wholesale market in a production region, not necessarily the prices received at individual farms.

In March 2026, a report on Singra in the Chalan Beel region recorded prices of Tk 10 for large duck eggs suitable for hatchery use and Tk 8–9 for smaller eggs. Differences in size and intended use must therefore be considered when comparing prices.

Meanwhile, a report published by Dainik Fenir Shomoy on 20 September 2026 recorded retail duck egg prices of Tk 78–80 per four eggs in Sonagazi—equivalent to Tk 19.50–20 each. This represented a particular local market, not the national price.

These findings highlight the importance of time, location, egg size, and buyer type. Subtracting a March price in one production region from a September retail price elsewhere would not produce a valid estimate of traders’ profits.

How Do Eggs Travel from Farm to Consumer?

One possible route is: Farmer → Local collector → Commission agent or wholesaler → Retailer → Consumer

Not every market follows all these stages. Some farmers sell directly to wholesalers, local shops, or regular consumers.

Local collectors bring together eggs from smaller farms. Wholesalers arrange larger shipments. Retailers sell small quantities according to consumers’ needs. These services have economic value.

Commission agents may also operate differently. Some buy and resell eggs, while others arrange sales for a commission. In a commission-based transaction, counting the same charge both as a commission and as a separate price increase would double-count the cost.

An Illustrative Calculation: When a Tk 12 Egg Sells for Tk 17

Suppose a farmer sells eggs from a particular batch at Tk 12 each. After passing through several stages, eggs of the same size and quality sell at a retail shop for Tk 17.

All prices below are assumed for illustration. They are not survey findings.

Market stageSelling price per eggIncrease from the previous stageValue per 100 eggs
FarmerTk 12.00—Tk 1,200
Local collectorTk 13.00Tk 1.00Tk 1,300
WholesalerTk 14.50Tk 1.50Tk 1,450
RetailerTk 17.00Tk 2.50Tk 1,700

The farm-to-retail price difference is Tk 5 per egg. That equals Tk 20 per four eggs, Tk 60 per dozen, or Tk 500 per 100 eggs.

The increase relative to the farmer’s selling price is:

5 ÷ 12 × 100 = approximately 41.7%.

The farmer’s share of the consumer’s Tk 17 payment is:

12 ÷ 17 × 100 = approximately 70.6%.

The remaining 29.4% represents the total price spread across the marketing stages. It includes both costs and business earnings. It cannot be described entirely as intermediaries’ net profit.

Where Does the Additional Tk 5 Go?

The difference between buying and selling prices at each stage is the gross margin. Subtracting the relevant expenses gives the net return.

Using the same example, suppose the following costs apply:

StageGross margin per eggAssumed marketing costAmount remaining after costs
Local collectorTk 1.00Tk 0.60Tk 0.40
WholesalerTk 1.50Tk 0.90Tk 0.60
RetailerTk 2.50Tk 1.20Tk 1.30
TotalTk 5.00Tk 2.70Tk 2.30

These costs are also illustrative. Actual calculations must verify transport, labour, trays or packaging, broken and unsold eggs, rent, financing, and other applicable expenses. If any costs are omitted, the remaining amount cannot be treated as final net profit.

A 2013 study of layer chicken egg marketing in selected areas of Gazipur calculated marketing costs and net margins separately for different market participants. It does not establish current duck egg prices, but it demonstrates why buying and selling prices alone are insufficient for analysing market returns.

Why Can Farmers Lose Money Even When Retail Prices Are High?

A consumer paying Tk 17 for an egg does not necessarily mean the farmer is making a profit. The farmer’s return depends on the farm’s own selling price and production cost.

Suppose the farmer receives Tk 12 per egg.

Tk 10.50Tk 12.00Tk 1.50 profit
Tk 12.00Tk 12.00Break-even
Tk 13.50Tk 12.00Tk 1.50 loss

Three farms can therefore have three different outcomes at the same selling price. Feed prices, laying rates, flock age, mortality, management, and access to natural feed may contribute to these differences.

Production costs must include more than feed bills. Labour, veterinary care, water and electricity, depreciation of housing and equipment, loan interest, and duckling or replacement costs must be allocated appropriately. Income from selling ducks or other sources must also be accounted for within the same period.

Most importantly, costs should be divided by the number of saleable eggs. Eggs that are produced but broken or otherwise unfit for sale do not generate revenue.

What Happens When the Laying Rate Falls?

Consider a simple example in which a farm’s total cost allocated to egg production on a particular day is Tk 8,000.

  • With 800 saleable eggs, the cost is Tk 10 per egg.
  • With 650 saleable eggs, the cost is approximately Tk 12.31 per egg.
  • With 500 saleable eggs, the cost is Tk 16 per egg.

This calculation holds daily costs constant while changing only egg output. Actual costs may also change. Nevertheless, it shows how falling production can quickly reduce profitability even when market prices remain unchanged.

Discussions about fair duck egg prices must therefore consider production efficiency alongside market rates.

How Important Is Egg Breakage?

Suppose a trader buys 1,000 eggs at Tk 12 each, spending Tk 12,000. During transport and handling, 20 eggs are completely damaged and have no sale value.

Only 980 saleable eggs remain. The purchase cost alone becomes:

12,000 ÷ 980 = approximately Tk 12.24 per saleable egg.

Transport and other costs must then be added. In this example, losing just 2% of the eggs raises the purchase cost by approximately Tk 0.24 per saleable egg.

However, loss claims should be verifiable. Instead of saying that “many eggs break,” traders should record how many eggs they purchased, how many were damaged, and how many they sold.

Where Do Small Farmers Lose Bargaining Power?

A small farmer selling limited quantities each day may face high costs when sending eggs to a distant market. This can create dependence on local buyers. An urgent need for cash to purchase feed can also make it difficult to wait for a better price.

Credit arrangements involving feed or advance payments may further restrict selling choices. However, such arrangements should not be labelled exploitative without examining their actual terms. The relevant questions are whether the farmer can freely sell to other buyers and whether the accounts are transparent.

The absence of size-based pricing may create another disadvantage. If all eggs are purchased from the farm at one price and larger eggs are later sold separately at a premium, the farmer may receive none of that additional value. Transparent grading by size and quality is therefore important.

How Can the Actual Farm-to-Retail Price Increase Be Measured?

Collecting prices on the same day is useful, but following the same batch provides stronger evidence.

Investigators should record the purchase date, quantity, size, payment terms, and actual price at the farm. They should then follow transactions involving that batch through the collector, wholesaler, and retailer. If retail sales take several days, the average price actually received over that period should be calculated.

Information to verifyWhy it matters
Same egg size and qualityPrevents misleading comparisons between large and small eggs
Same batch and relevant sales periodPrevents mixing prices from different transactions
Cash and credit termsReveals financing effects
Actual buying and selling pricesDistinguishes quoted prices from transaction prices
Broken, returned, and unsold eggsEstablishes actual losses
Transport, commission, and labourSeparates costs from the gross price spread

Without these details, claims that eggs sell for “twice the farm price” may attract attention but fail to explain the market accurately.

Does a Large Price Difference Prove Manipulation?

A large price difference alone does not establish manipulation. Reduced supply, distance, small shipments, breakage, and retail expenses can widen the gap.

However, these expenses may also conceal opaque pricing practices. Investigators should examine why selling prices do not fall when purchase prices decline, whether commissions and deductions are documented, whether buyers compete, and whether claimed expenses match transaction records.

Before publishing allegations against a particular person or business, evidence and their response should be obtained. Reliable market accountability depends on verified information.

How Can Both Farmers and Consumers Benefit?

A practical first step is to publish prices regularly from production areas, major wholesale markets, and selected retail markets. Each price should include the date, egg size, and transaction type.

Small farmers could also organise joint collection and transport to create larger shipments. Such arrangements require clear member accounts, responsibility for breakage, cost-sharing rules, and payment schedules.

Direct sales to shops, hotels, and regular consumers may offer another opportunity. But removing intermediaries does not automatically increase farmers’ profits. Transport, timely delivery, and payment collection then become the farmer’s responsibility. Those costs must be deducted before judging the benefit.

For example, an additional Tk 0.50 per egg on daily sales of 700 eggs produces Tk 350 in extra revenue. If the new arrangement adds Tk 200 in daily expenses, the actual additional benefit is Tk 150. Decisions should be based on that remaining benefit.

Market Performance Must Be Assessed at Both Ends

A successful duck egg market cannot be judged solely by retail sales volume. Farmers must be able to cover full production costs and earn a return, while consumers should have access to eggs at reasonable prices.

Prices will rise between farm and consumer because collection, transport, and retailing involve work and expense. But there should be a transparent account of how much of that increase covers necessary costs and how much becomes earnings.

Reducing waste, opening transaction records, and expanding competitive selling opportunities can help improve both farmers’ returns and consumer affordability. The most valuable next investigation would follow the same batch of eggs from farm to retail and publish the verified accounts—replacing assumptions with evidence.
