মৎস্য ও প্রাণিসম্পদ এবং কৃষি মন্ত্রী মোহাম্মদ আমিন উর রশিদ বলেছেন, জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়সহ অন্যান্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের লেকগুলোতে পরিকল্পিতভাবে মাছ চাষ করা গেলে তা দেশের মিঠাপানির মাছ উৎপাদনে হতে পারে নতুন দৃষ্টান্ত।
আজ সকালে মৎস্য অধিদপ্তরের ২০২৫-২৬ অর্থবছরের রাজস্ব বাজেটের আওতায় জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় লেকে মাছের পোনা অবমুক্তকরণ কর্মসূচি শেষে সাংবাদিকদের সঙ্গে মতবিনিময়কালে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন।
মন্ত্রী বলেন, জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে প্রায় ১৮০ একর জলাশয়ে আধুনিক পদ্ধতিতে মাছ উৎপাদন করা হলে কয়েক হাজার মানুষের কর্মসংস্থান সৃষ্টি এবং বছরে কয়েক কোটি টাকার আয় সম্ভব হবে। এত বড় জলাশয় থাকা সত্ত্বেও অতীতে এ সম্ভাবনাকে যথাযথভাবে কাজে লাগানো হয়নি, যা অত্যন্ত দুঃখজনক।
মন্ত্রী বলেন, সরকারের পক্ষ থেকে আজ প্রায় ৩৯৫ কেজি মাছের পোনা অবমুক্ত করা হয়েছে। দীর্ঘদিন মাছ চাষ না হওয়া এবং বাইরের পানির সঙ্গে সংযোগ থাকায় লেকগুলোতে রাক্ষুসে মাছ থাকার সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে। এ কারণে ছোট পোনার পরিবর্তে তুলনামূলক বড় আকারের পোনা অবমুক্ত করা হয়েছে, যাতে সহজে নষ্ট না হয় এবং টিকে থাকতে পারে।
তিনি আরও বলেন, বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতিকে আরও শক্তিশালী করতে হলে কৃষি ও মৎস্য খাতকে সর্বোচ্চ গুরুত্ব দিতে হবে। ধান, পাট কিংবা মাছ-কোনো ক্ষেত্রেই এক ইঞ্চি জমি বা জলাশয় অনাবাদি রাখা যাবে না। পরিকল্পিত ও প্রযুক্তিনির্ভর চাষাবাদের মাধ্যমেই দেশের খাদ্য নিরাপত্তা ও অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়ন নিশ্চিত করা সম্ভব।
মন্ত্রী বলেন, দেশের ৭৫ থেকে ৯০ শতাংশ মানুষ প্রত্যক্ষ বা পরোক্ষভাবে কৃষির সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত। কৃষকের অর্থনৈতিক সক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধি পেলে দেশের সামগ্রিক অর্থনীতিও শক্তিশালী হবে। এ লক্ষ্যেই সরকার কৃষক কার্ড, ফ্যামিলি কার্ড, স্বল্পসুদে কৃষিঋণসহ বিভিন্ন কৃষিবান্ধব কর্মসূচি বাস্তবায়ন করছে।
আসন্ন কোরবানির ঈদ উপলক্ষ্যে গবাদিপশুর কোনো সংকট নেই উল্লেখ করে মৎস্য ও প্রাণিসম্পদ মন্ত্রী বলেন, বাংলাদেশ বর্তমানে মাংস উৎপাদনে স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ। দেশীয় খামারিদের স্বার্থ রক্ষায় সীমান্ত পথে অবৈধভাবে গবাদিপশু প্রবেশ ঠেকাতে সরকার, বিজিবি ও আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনী সর্বোচ্চ সতর্ক অবস্থানে রয়েছে।
অনুষ্ঠানে সভাপতিত্ব করেন জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক ড. মোহাম্মদ কামরুল আহসান, বিশেষ অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন মৎস্য ও প্রাণিসম্পদ মন্ত্রণালয়ের সচিব মো: দেলোয়ার হোসেন , মৎস্য অধিদপ্তরের মহাপরিচালক জিয়া হায়দার চৌধুরী, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষক -শিক্ষার্থীসহ সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্মকর্তারা উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
উল্লেখ্য, জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় লেকে প্রজাতিভিত্তিক মোট ৩৯৫ কেজি মাছের পোনা অবমুক্ত করা হয়। এর মধ্যে ছিল রুই ১৫৮ কেজি, কাতলা ১১৮.৫ কেজি, মৃগেল ৭৯ কেজি এবং কালিবাউস ৩৯.৫ কেজি।

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammed Amin Ur Rashid today said that planned fish farming in university lakes, including those at Jahangirnagar University (JU), could set a new benchmark for freshwater aquaculture in Bangladesh.
“Modern fish production across approximately 180 acres of water bodies at Jahangirnagar University alone could create employment for thousands and generate several crores of taka in annual revenue,” the minister said.
The minister made these remarks while addressing journalists after releasing fish fingerlings into the JU lakes this morning. The initiative was part of the Department of Fisheries’ revenue budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Highlighting the technical aspects of the initiative, he noted that 395 kg of fingerlings were released today. “Since these lakes were unmanaged for a long time and are connected to external water sources, there is a possibility of predatory fish presence. To ensure survival, we have released larger fingerlings instead of small fry,” he added.
Reiterating the government’s stance on food security, Minister emphasised that agriculture and fisheries must remain the backbone of the national economy.
”Not a single inch of land or water body should be left uncultivated. We must rely on planned and technology-driven farming to ensure our economic sovereignty,” he said. He further mentioned that since nearly 90 percent of the population is tied to the agrarian economy, the government is providing support through initiatives like ‘Krishak Cards’, ‘Family Cards’ and low-interest loans.
Regarding the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha, the minister assured the public that there is no shortage of sacrificial animals. “Bangladesh is now self-sufficient in meat production. To protect our local farmers, the government, BGB, and law enforcement agencies are on high alert to prevent the illegal entry of cattle through borders,” he said.
The event was presided over by JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan. Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Md. Delwar Hossain and Director General of the Department of Fisheries Zia Haider Chowdhury attended as special guests. Faculty members, students, and senior officials were also present.
A total of 395 kg of fingerlings were released into the university lakes today, comprising 158 kg of Rui, 118.5 kg of Katla, 79 kg of Mrigel, and 39.5 kg of Kalibaus.
