International Journal of Poultry Science

International Journal of Poultry Science

International Journal of Poultry Science

ScienceDirect

Genesis Publishing Consortium Limited (GPCL)

Genesis Publishing Consortium Limited (GPCL)

Sucker Fish as Feed: Questions That Must Be Answered Before Exploring Its Potential

Sucker fish is being discussed as a low-cost protein source. But using it in poultry and fish feed could introduce new risks unless its origin, processing methods, contamination levels and legal status are clearly established.

A research-based report by agricultural journalist Dr. Bayezid Moral

Finding alternative protein sources for fish and poultry feed is necessary. In that search, interest in sucker fish is understandable. Could processing fish captured from water bodies into feed ingredients serve two purposes at once—controlling an invasive species and supplying raw materials for feed?

The idea is appealing. Its practical value, however, depends on answers to several difficult questions. Whether the fish contains protein is one question. Whether that protein is safe, digestible, affordable and legally usable requires separate answers.

Studies abroad have investigated sucker fish meal in experimental diets. Meanwhile, a study in Bangladesh found concerning cadmium levels in collected samples. Broader evidence is therefore needed before declaring it a proven solution or concluding that sucker fish from every location is equally unsuitable. Sources: International Journal of Poultry Science, GPCL

First Question: Which Fish Are We Talking About?

“Sucker fish” is a common name. Research on fish described by this name includes different scientific names, such as Pterygoplichthys pardalis and Hypostomus plecostomus. A Thai poultry feeding study used the former, while the Bangladesh contamination study identified its samples as the latter. Sources: International Journal of Poultry Science, GPCL

This distinction matters. Findings from one species, one water body or one processed sample cannot automatically be applied to all sucker fish.

Any assessment of its suitability in Bangladesh must begin with species identification. Records should also state where and when the fish were caught, their size and which body parts were tested. Simply saying that “sucker fish has been tested” provides too little information to interpret the findings.

Second Question: How Much Potential Has International Research Actually Demonstrated?

A Thai study published in 2020 tested sucker fish meal as a replacement for conventional fishmeal at different levels in the diets of 200 native crossbred chickens. The researchers reported positive effects on growth and certain meat characteristics when 25–50% of the fishmeal was replaced. These findings support further investigation of the fish as an alternative protein source. Source: International Journal of Poultry Science

One calculation must be clearly understood: replacing 25% of the fishmeal does not mean including sucker fish meal at 25% of the total diet. It means replacing a portion of the fishmeal already present in the feed. Confusing these figures could lead to a seriously incorrect feed formulation.

An Indonesian study on tilapia, published in 2026, also reported promising results. During a 12-week trial, growth in groups receiving diets in which 50% and 75% of conventional fishmeal was replaced with sucker fish meal was comparable to the control group. Tests of selected blood indicators and intestinal microbial parameters also found no significant adverse changes. However, these specific findings do not establish the long-term safety of raw materials collected from different sources in Bangladesh. Source: Egyptian Journal of Aquatic Research

International research has opened a path for investigation. Establishing appropriate conditions for use in Bangladesh remains a separate task.

Third Question: What Warning Has Research in Bangladesh Provided?

A Bangladesh study published in 2024 examined the nutritional composition and selected metal concentrations in muscle tissue from sucker fish collected at four locations. The researchers reported average protein content of approximately 20.65% and cadmium concentrations of approximately 1.78 milligrams per kilogram. They considered the cadmium and zinc levels concerning and concluded against using the sampled fish to produce feed ingredients. Source: GPCL

The study’s limitations must also be recognised. Samples from a few locations cannot establish conditions in every water body across Bangladesh. Similarly, limits cited for fish intended for human consumption should not automatically be treated as identical to the applicable limits for livestock or aquaculture feed ingredients.

The study should therefore be regarded as an important warning signal. The logical next step is independent testing across different water bodies, seasons and processed products.

Fourth Question: Is Knowing the Protein Percentage Enough?

Evaluating a feed ingredient requires more than measuring its total protein content. Researchers must determine how effectively that protein is used: whether chickens or fish can digest it, whether essential amino acids are adequately balanced and how the ingredient performs alongside other components of the diet.

Meal made from whole fish, muscle alone or fish containing internal organs will not necessarily have the same composition. Test reports must clearly identify the material being evaluated.

Another common mistake must be avoided. The protein percentage in raw fish muscle cannot be compared directly with that in dried fishmeal. Removing water changes the percentage composition. Comparisons must use the same measurement basis.

Testing in Bangladesh should therefore include, at a minimum, moisture, protein, fat, ash, calcium, phosphorus, essential amino acids and digestibility. Ultimately, farmers need to know the value of the protein their fish or poultry can actually use.

Fifth Question: Does Drying or Boiling Make It Safe?

Microbial contamination and chemical contamination must be assessed separately when evaluating processing methods.

Heat treatment may help control microbial hazards. But a process that reduces microorganisms cannot automatically be assumed to remove metal contamination. Addressing the cadmium concerns raised by the Bangladesh study requires testing both the raw material and the finished meal. Source: GPCL

Statements such as “it has been boiled,” “it has been sun-dried” or “it has no unpleasant smell” do not provide complete evidence of safety. The effectiveness of the proposed method must be demonstrated through testing.

Process validation should consider temperature and treatment time, final moisture content, storage conditions, recontamination and shelf life. Consistency across multiple batches produced using the same method is also essential.

Sixth Question: Could Contaminants Pass from Feed into Human Food?

Research would remain incomplete if it measured only chicken weight gain or fish growth. After feeding the experimental diets, researchers must also test the resulting meat, eggs and edible fish tissues for contaminants.

Carefully designed trials are needed to establish how much of a substance is absorbed, where it accumulates and whether its concentration changes with the duration of feeding.

Good growth performance and confirmed food safety are separate outcomes. Nutritionists, toxicologists, veterinarians and food safety researchers should therefore be involved from the beginning.

There is also no justification for speculation-driven alarm. Without testing, it would be equally inappropriate to claim that using sucker fish ingredients necessarily causes a particular level of contamination in meat or eggs.

Seventh Question: What Is the Legal Route for Using a Banned Fish?

The legal position cannot be overlooked in Bangladesh. A Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report dated 25 January 2023, citing an official information statement, said that a notification issued on 11 January prohibited the import, farming, transportation, sale, supply and preservation of sucker fish. Source: BSS

Written clarification from the relevant authorities is needed on how removal for population control, research sampling and any proposed processing may be conducted within these restrictions.

Research conducted abroad does not constitute permission for commercial use in Bangladesh. Permission to conduct research must also be distinguished from permission to sell a feed ingredient on the open market.

The source review undertaken for this report did not establish clear government approval for the commercial use of sucker fish as a feed ingredient in Bangladesh.

Eighth Question: Would Creating a Market Help Control the Fish—or Encourage Its Spread?

If utilisation is considered a control measure, a possible unintended consequence must also be examined. Could demand encourage people to keep the fish alive, release it into new water bodies or attempt to farm it?

This is a potential policy risk; this report does not claim that such activities have occurred.

Any future authorised pilot project should aim to remove existing populations. It should document raw material sources, collection locations and supply movements. Monitoring must also establish whether the project contributes to further spread.

Environmental success cannot be measured solely by the tonnes of fishmeal produced. It must also be assessed by whether sucker fish populations decline in the targeted water bodies.

Ninth Question: Would Meal Made from Freely Available Fish Necessarily Be Cheap?

A low raw-fish price does not guarantee an affordable finished ingredient. Collection, sorting, transportation, processing, drying, grinding, testing, packaging and waste management all add costs.

A profitability assessment remains incomplete without knowing how many kilograms of raw fish are needed to produce one kilogram of acceptable meal, how much material is rejected and whether supplies are available throughout the year.

Economic trials should therefore report three measures together:

  • The total production cost per kilogram of meal that passes the required tests.
  • The cost per kilogram of weight gain when the ingredient is included in a diet.
  • Actual savings and consistency of quality compared with conventional alternatives.

If cheaper raw materials reduce feed efficiency, farmers may gain no financial advantage.

What Kind of Research Does Bangladesh Need?

The first stage should involve representative sampling. Samples from industrially polluted water bodies, comparatively less polluted locations and different seasons should be tested separately. Species identification and source records must accompany the samples.

The second stage should compare ingredients produced from the same raw material using different processing methods. Nutritional composition, contamination, microbiological quality and storage stability should all be assessed.

The third stage could involve legally authorised, controlled feeding trials, including a comparison group receiving conventional feed. Alongside growth and feed efficiency, researchers should examine health outcomes and contaminants in the resulting food products.

Acceptance criteria should be established before each stage begins. Procedures are also needed for rejecting unsuitable material and publishing the findings.

These are proposed elements of a research framework, rather than a description of an existing government project.

Questions for Authorities and Researchers

To turn public discussion into useful evidence, the Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, Department of Livestock Services, universities and relevant laboratories should address several specific questions:

  1. Which sucker fish species have spread in Bangladesh, and what contamination levels are being found in different locations?
  2. Which testing methods and applicable standards will be used to evaluate them as feed ingredients?
  3. What legal arrangements apply to collection for population control and research?
  4. Has safety been assessed throughout the chain—from finished meal to the fish, meat and eggs produced?
  5. If utilisation proves economically unviable, how will the collected fish be managed safely?
  6. Will research and pilot-project findings be made publicly available?

Potential Must Be Supported by Verifiable Evidence

Sucker fish warrants research. International feeding trials provide a reason to investigate its potential, while contamination findings from Bangladesh demonstrate the need for closer scrutiny.

Research potential, experimental success and approval for commercial use are distinct matters. Before advising farmers to use an ingredient, its origin, nutritional value, safety, legal status and actual cost must be established.

Before asking “How profitable could sucker fish feed be?”, the first question should be: “Fish from which source, tested by which methods, has been shown to be acceptable for which use?” Making those answers public would help ensure that discussion of its potential serves farmers, consumers and aquatic ecosystems.
