মাছে-ভাতে বাঙালির ঐতিহ্য ধরে রাখতে মৎস্য উৎপাদন বাড়াতে হবে–প্রতিমন্ত্রী সুলতান সালাউদ্দিন টুকু

মাছে-ভাতে বাঙালির ঐতিহ্য ধরে রাখতে মৎস্য উৎপাদন আরও বাড়াতে হবে বলে মন্তব্য করেছেন মৎস্য ও প্রাণিসম্পদ প্রতিমন্ত্রী সুলতান সালাউদ্দিন টুকু এমপি। তিনি বলেন, বিশ্বে মাছ উৎপাদনে বাংলাদেশ অনেক এগিয়ে রয়েছে। এই অবস্থানকে আরও এগিয়ে নিতে হবে।
আজ সকালে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মৎস্যবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের আয়োজনে জাতীয় মৎস্য পক্ষ উপলক্ষে পোনামাছ অবমুক্তকরণ ও আলোচনা সভায় প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন। মৎস্যবিজ্ঞান ভবনের প্রফেসর মোহাম্মদ শফি অডিটোরিয়ামে এ আলোচনা সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।
প্রতিমন্ত্রী বলেন, ফিসারিজ সেক্টরের পরিধি অনেক বড় এবং এ খাতে কর্মক্ষেত্রও অনেক বিস্তৃত। একসময় মানুষ এই সেক্টরকে এতটা গুরুত্ব দিত না। কিন্তু দিন যত যাচ্ছে, মানুষ এর গুরুত্ব তত বেশি অনুধাবন করছে এবং এর পরিধি সম্পর্কেও জানতে পারছে।
তিনি বলেন, বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতিতে মৎস্য খাত অনেক বেশি ভূমিকা রাখতে সক্ষম। স্বাধীনতার ঘোষক শহীদ রাষ্ট্রপতি জিয়াউর রহমান বিষয়টি অনুধাবন করতে পেরেছিলেন। খাল খনন কর্মসূচির মধ্য দিয়ে তিনি মৎস্য খাতকে কীভাবে এগিয়ে নেওয়া যায় এবং মৎস্যসম্পদ দিয়ে কীভাবে বাংলাদেশকে সমৃদ্ধ করা যায়, সে উদ্যোগ নিয়েছিলেন। একই সঙ্গে মানুষকে মৎস্য চাষে উদ্বুদ্ধ করেছিলেন। তিনি আরও বলেন, এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় এই মৎস্য পক্ষ শুরু করেন সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী বেগম খালেদা জিয়া। পরবর্তীতে প্রধানমন্ত্রী তারেক রহমান মাছের উৎপাদন বৃদ্ধির লক্ষ্যে খাল খনন কর্মসূচি গ্রহণ করেছেন।
দেশের নদ-নদীর নাব্যতা ও দূষণ প্রসঙ্গে প্রতিমন্ত্রী বলেন, বর্তমানে আমাদের অনেক নদীর নাব্যতা নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে। নদীগুলোকে কীভাবে দূষণমুক্ত করা যায় এবং নাব্যতা ফিরিয়ে আনা যায়, সে বিষয়ে পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া হয়েছে। তিনি বলেন, গভীর সমুদ্রে মাছ আহরণের ক্ষেত্রেও সরকার পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছে। বাংলাদেশ যদি গভীর সমুদ্রে মাছ আহরণে সক্ষম হয়, তাহলে দেশের অর্থনীতিতে এটি বিশাল ভূমিকা রাখতে সক্ষম হবে।
মৎস্যবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের শিক্ষার্থীদের উদ্দেশে প্রতিমন্ত্রী বলেন, আগামীর বাংলাদেশে মৎস্য খাতে উজ্জ্বল সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে। কর্মক্ষেত্র ও জীবন গঠনের ক্ষেত্রে শিক্ষার্থীরা এ খাতে নিজেদের এগিয়ে নিতে পারবেন। বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশ বর্তমানে মৎস্য খাতকে অত্যন্ত গুরুত্ব দিচ্ছে। তিনি বলেন, মৎস্য খাত সম্পর্কে জ্ঞানচর্চার মাধ্যমে এর সম্ভাবনা ও গুরুত্ব সম্পর্কে জানতে হবে। ভবিষ্যতে মৎস্যসম্পদ রক্ষা ও উন্নয়নে মৎস্য শিক্ষাকে আরও কার্যকর ও যুগোপযোগী করার জন্য সবার সম্মিলিত প্রচেষ্টা প্রয়োজন।
অনুষ্ঠানে সভাপতিত্ব করেন ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মৎস্যবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের চেয়ারম্যান অধ্যাপক ওয়াহিদা হক। গেস্ট অব অনার হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক ড. এ বি এম ওয়ায়দুল ইসলাম। বিশেষ অতিথি ছিলেন মৎস্য অধিদপ্তরের মহাপরিচালক ড. মো. খালেদ কনক।
এর আগে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কার্জন হলের পুকুরে পোনামাছ অবমুক্ত করেন মৎস্য ও প্রাণিসম্পদ প্রতিমন্ত্রী।
Fish Production Must Be Increased to Preserve Bengali Tradition

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku, MP, has emphasised the need to further increase fish production to uphold the traditional Bengali identity of “Mache-Bhate Bangali” (Bengalis thrive on fish and rice).
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a fish fry release programme and discussion meeting organised by the Department of Fisheries at the University of Dhaka on the occasion of National Fisheries Fortnight. The discussion was held at the Professor Mohammad Shafi Auditorium of the Fisheries Science Building.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s position in global fisheries production, the State Minister said the country has made significant progress in fish production and needs to further strengthen its position globally.
“The fisheries sector is vast and offers extensive employment opportunities,” he said. “Although people once paid less attention to this sector, they are increasingly realizing its importance and vast potential.”
He emphasised the significant contribution of the fisheries sector to the national economy, saying that the Proclaimer of Independence, the late President Ziaur Rahman, had recognised the potential of the sector.
“Through his canal excavation programme, President Ziaur Rahman took initiatives to develop the fisheries sector and enrich Bangladesh through its aquatic resources while encouraging people to engage in fish farming,” he said.
The State Minister added that former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia subsequently introduced National Fisheries Fortnight as a continuation of these efforts, while Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has further undertaken canal excavation programmes aimed at increasing fish production.
Addressing the issues of river navigability and pollution, the State Minister said many rivers across the country have lost their navigability. He said government initiatives are underway to restore the navigability of rivers and free them from pollution.
He also said steps have been taken to promote deep-sea fishing. “If Bangladesh can successfully expand its capacity for deep-sea fishing, it could make a significant contribution to the country’s economy,” he said.
Addressing the students of the Department of Fisheries, the state minister said the fisheries sector holds promising prospects for the future and encouraged them to build their careers in this sector. He said countries around the world are increasingly prioritising the fisheries sector and called for concerted efforts to make fisheries education more effective, modern and relevant to future needs, while ensuring the conservation and development of aquatic resources.
The event was chaired by Professor Wahida Haque, Chair of the Department of Fisheries at the University of Dhaka.
University of Dhaka Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A. B. M. Obaidul Islam attended the programme as the Guest of Honour, while Dr Md Khaled Kanak, Director General of the Department of Fisheries, attended as a special guest.
Earlier, The State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku released fish fry into the pond at Curzon Hall on the University of Dhaka campus.
