How Much Does Solar Power Cost—and How Many Years Does It Take to Recover the Investment?
There is sunlight on your roof—but do the numbers add up? A practical guide to solar installation costs, savings and investment recovery for homes, shops and agricultural farms
A research-based report by agricultural journalist Dr. Bayezid Moral
Every month, when the electricity bill arrives, many people wonder: What if I installed solar panels on my roof? I could generate my own electricity, reduce my monthly bills and eventually recover the money I invested.
The idea is promising. But before spending money, two questions deserve careful attention: Is the system designed for your actual needs? And will it deliver the savings you have been promised?
A solar system of the same capacity may be a worthwhile investment for one customer while taking much longer to pay for itself for another. Panel prices alone do not determine profitability. Sunlight, daytime electricity consumption, battery requirements and the amount of generated electricity that delivers financial value all influence the result.
First, decide: Do you want lower bills or electricity during outages?
This decision should come before choosing a solar system. There are three main options.
| System type | How it works | Main cost consideration |
|---|---|---|
| On-grid | Operates alongside the electricity grid and usually has no battery | Initial costs are generally lower without battery storage |
| Off-grid | Operates independently of the grid, generally using solar panels and batteries | Battery capacity must cover nighttime and periods of insufficient sunlight |
| Hybrid | Combines solar panels, grid electricity and batteries | Costs increase with battery capacity and the required backup duration |
Suppliers distinguish between these systems when discussing costs. A price quoted for a battery-free system should therefore not be treated as the price of a system that also provides battery backup.
Another point is particularly important: A conventional on-grid solar system shuts down for safety when grid electricity fails. Having panels on the roof does not automatically mean that fans, pumps or farm ventilation equipment will keep running during an outage. Suitable backup equipment is needed for that purpose. SREDA’s Net Metering Guidelines include requirements for this protective disconnection, known as anti-islanding.
How much might installation cost?
The cost of a solar system includes more than panels. It also covers the inverter, mounting structure, wiring, protective equipment, earthing, installation and testing. Batteries, when required, add a substantial expense.
An indicative price list published by Bangladeshi supplier AB Power Engineering gives the following ranges:
| System capacity | Supplier’s published indicative cost |
|---|---|
| 1 kilowatt | BDT 80,000–170,000 or more |
| 3 kilowatts | BDT 240,000–480,000 or more |
| 5 kilowatts | BDT 400,000–800,000 or more |
| 10 kilowatts | BDT 800,000–1,600,000 or more |
These figures represent one supplier’s preliminary estimates, rather than a fixed national market price. The table does not specify battery capacity or a complete equipment list for each system size. It should therefore not be interpreted as a firm quotation for comparable battery-free systems. A written quotation should follow an assessment of the roof and the customer’s requirements.
When comparing quotations, check whether they include equivalent panel capacities, inverter types, batteries and installation work. A lower headline price may rise later if structural work, safety equipment or installation tasks were excluded.
How much electricity can a 5-kilowatt system generate?
Kilowatts measure system capacity. The “units” shown on an electricity bill measure energy: one unit equals one kilowatt-hour.
A 5-kilowatt solar array will therefore not generate five units every hour throughout the day.
A Power Division solar calculator hosted by DPDC uses an initial assumption of 1,300 units per year for each kilowatt of installed panel capacity. Using that assumption, a 5-kilowatt system could generate approximately 6,500 units annually, averaging about 542 units per month.
This is a preliminary estimate, rather than a guarantee for a particular roof. The calculator also contains older tariff and policy references, which must be checked separately before making a current investment decision.
Production will vary from month to month. Shade, clouds, dust, panel positioning and equipment downtime all affect actual output.
If you invest BDT 400,000, when might you recover it?
Consider the following example. These are illustrative assumptions, rather than a guaranteed supplier offer:
- Total investment in a battery-free 5-kilowatt system: BDT 400,000.
- Annual generation: 6,500 units.
- All generated electricity provides financial value through consumption or an approved settlement arrangement.
- Average effective financial benefit: BDT 12 per unit.
- Annual allowance for cleaning, inspections and routine maintenance: BDT 6,000.
The annual gross benefit would be:
6,500 × BDT 12 = BDT 78,000.
After deducting the maintenance allowance, the annual net benefit would be:
BDT 78,000 − BDT 6,000 = BDT 72,000.
The simple payback period would then be:
BDT 400,000 ÷ BDT 72,000 = approximately 5.6 years.
Under these assumptions, savings equivalent to the initial investment could accumulate in roughly five years and seven months.
The BDT 12 figure is an assumed average benefit, rather than a universal electricity tariff. The actual value must reflect both savings from electricity consumed on-site and the applicable value of electricity supplied to the grid.
Why can the same solar system have different payback periods?
Keeping the investment, generation and maintenance assumptions unchanged, the results vary with the financial value of each generated unit.
| Average effective benefit per unit | Annual net benefit | Simple payback period |
|---|---|---|
| BDT 8 | BDT 46,000 | About 8.7 years |
| BDT 10 | BDT 59,000 | About 6.8 years |
| BDT 12 | BDT 72,000 | About 5.6 years |
| BDT 14 | BDT 85,000 | About 4.7 years |
These calculations exclude loan interest, future equipment replacement, gradual production decline and the time value of money. A full investment assessment should account for those factors.
Payback also becomes longer if some generated electricity delivers no financial value. For example, if only 70% of generation provides a benefit of BDT 12 per unit and the remaining 30% provides none, the annual net benefit falls to BDT 48,600. Simple payback then rises to approximately 8.2 years.
Profitability depends on both how much electricity the system generates and how much of that electricity delivers financial value.
How does net metering help?
A solar system may generate more electricity during the day than a home or business needs at that moment. Under an approved net-metering arrangement, surplus electricity can be supplied to the grid.
A bidirectional meter records electricity received from and supplied to the grid. Billing adjustments and settlement follow the applicable rules.
However, installing solar does not necessarily reduce the entire electricity bill to zero. Applicable fixed charges or other bill components may remain.
In September 2026, the Power Division published a special rooftop-solar incentive notification and subsequently issued a clarification. Before including export income in an investment calculation, customers should obtain written confirmation from their distribution utility about the conditions and rates applicable to their project.
Where are the opportunities for agricultural farms?
Poultry farms, dairy farms, fish farms and agricultural processing businesses with regular daytime electricity consumption have an opportunity to assess solar power.
Monthly bills alone, however, do not provide the full picture. Farm owners need to know when pumps, fans, milk-cooling equipment and other machinery operate, and how much electricity they consume.
The more closely electricity use matches solar generation, the greater the opportunity to consume solar power directly.
For farms that require uninterrupted electricity, bill reduction and emergency backup should be designed together. Engineers must also account for the higher power demand that occurs when motors start.
What should you obtain in writing before paying?
- The total price and a complete list of equipment and installation work included.
- Panel capacity, inverter capacity and, where applicable, usable battery capacity.
- Expected annual generation based on shading and local conditions.
- Responsibility for net-metering applications, meter charges and connection expenses.
- Separate warranties for panels, inverters, batteries and installation.
- Expected routine maintenance and future major equipment replacement costs.
- Service arrangements and remedies if performance falls below agreed expectations.
Compare complete quotations from at least three companies. Have the roof assessed for structural suitability and available shade-free space.
Solar power offers considerable potential. A sound investment begins with your electricity bills, daytime consumption and the actual condition of your roof.
Alongside “How much will installation cost?”, ask another question: “How much money will it save me each year?”
A reliable answer to that second question will show how many years your rooftop sunlight may take to repay the investment.
