- Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS)-এর স্বীকৃতি;

Independence Award–Winning Agricultural Scientist Professor Dr. M. A. Rahim
The Life Story of a Legend Dedicated to Fruit Research, Germplasm Conservation, and the Welfare of Farmers
In the history of agricultural science in Bangladesh, there are a few individuals whose contributions cannot be measured merely by the number of research papers they published, technologies they developed, or awards they received. They build generations of scientists, establish new traditions of research, and ensure that the benefits of their knowledge and work reach millions of farmers. Professor Dr. M. A. Rahim (Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahim) is one such distinguished agricultural scientist, teacher, researcher, and mentor.
Throughout his long and illustrious career, Professor Rahim has made outstanding contributions to the collection and conservation of fruit-tree germplasm, selection of superior varieties, fruit production technologies, nursery management, safe food production, post-harvest technology, and agricultural value-chain development. His influence extends beyond Bangladesh, with his work contributing to agricultural and horticultural research across Asia and the Middle East.
Over a career spanning nearly 45 years, he has received numerous national and international awards in recognition of his remarkable contributions to agriculture, food security, and nutrition. The highest state recognition of his distinguished career came in 2026, when he received Bangladesh’s highest civilian honour, the Independence Award.
A Life Dedicated to Fruit Research in Bangladesh
One of the principal areas of Professor Rahim’s research has been the rich fruit resources of Bangladesh. He understood early on that indigenous fruit trees scattered across the villages and rural landscapes of Bangladesh are more than sources of food. Each species and variety represents a valuable genetic resource of the country.
Driven by this vision, he devoted himself to collecting, conserving, evaluating, and improving indigenous and promising fruit germplasm from different regions of Bangladesh.
His long association with the Germplasm Centre of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU-GPC) is particularly significant. According to his biography, he served as a Co-Investigator from 1991 to 2001 and as Director from 2003 to 2022, leading research and conservation activities involving diverse fruit and vegetable germplasm.
Under his initiative, the BAU-GPC Fruit Tree Improvement Project (FTIP) was launched to identify, improve, propagate, and distribute valuable fruit trees and superior planting materials throughout Bangladesh.
A Living Gene Bank of More Than 10,000 Mother Plants
One of Professor Rahim’s most remarkable achievements has been the development of an extensive collection of indigenous and exotic fruit germplasm.
According to his biography, approximately 10,550 mother plants representing 210 species and 128 registered varieties have been planted and maintained at BAU-GPC. The collection also includes 57 species of exotic fruits collected from 48 countries and 97 species of medicinal fruit plants.
This is far more than an orchard. It represents a living gene bank for Bangladesh’s agriculture and biodiversity.
Such germplasm resources are invaluable in the face of climate change, emerging diseases, changing food habits, and future crop-improvement challenges. A fruit variety that appears commercially insignificant today may contain valuable genes for tolerance to drought, salinity, high temperatures, or particular diseases.
It is this long-term vision that has transformed Professor Rahim’s work from conventional fruit research into an invaluable resource for the future of Bangladesh agriculture.
Taking Research from the Laboratory to Farmers’ Fields
A defining characteristic of Professor Rahim’s work is that he never confined research to university laboratories or academic publications.
After collecting germplasm, his objective was to identify superior fruit trees, propagate them, and ensure that improved planting materials and technologies reached farmers.
Alongside increasing fruit production, he placed strong emphasis on nutritional quality, economic value, and improving the incomes of small-scale farmers. To disseminate improved fruit varieties and production technologies, he developed skilled human resources by training students, agriculturists, agricultural production specialists, and farmers.
His research therefore achieved something particularly important: it moved beyond scientific discovery and became a practical instrument for improving farmers’ livelihoods.
From Fruits to Vegetables—A Broader Vision of Agricultural Research
After developing a successful model for fruit-tree improvement, Professor Rahim applied similar principles to improving the productivity of vegetable crops in Bangladesh.
Under his leadership, practical technologies were developed and disseminated in fruit and vegetable propagation, production, organic farming, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), integrated pest management, safe fruit production, post-harvest handling, and agricultural value-chain development.
This integrated approach is important because developing a superior variety alone does not guarantee profitability for farmers. Quality planting materials, proper crop management, disease and pest control, safe production methods, post-harvest management, and access to markets must all work together.
Professor Rahim viewed agriculture through precisely this comprehensive perspective.
Mentor to Hundreds of Advanced Researchers
The legacy of a great scientist is measured not only by his own research but also by the researchers he develops for future generations.
In this respect, Professor Dr. M. A. Rahim’s contribution is extraordinary.
According to his biography, approximately 350 MS students and more than 100 PhD students completed research under his supervision. They came not only from Horticulture but also from disciplines including Agroforestry, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Botany, Agricultural Chemistry, and Agricultural Value Chain. Students from several other universities also conducted research under his guidance.
He is therefore much more than an accomplished researcher. He is one of the builders of a vast human-resource base and a generation of agricultural researchers in Bangladesh.
His students now work in universities, research institutions, government agencies, private organisations, and agricultural development programmes at home and abroad. Through their work, Professor Rahim’s knowledge, values, and research philosophy continue to spread from one generation to another.
His Knowledge Has Reached 20,000 Farmers
Professor Rahim regarded the transfer of scientific knowledge to farmers as an integral part of agricultural research.
He provided training on fruit-tree production, storage and processing, Good Agricultural Practices, agricultural value chains, marketing, and other technologies. He also conducted Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes.
According to his biography, 64 training batches of 25–30 participants each were conducted on different aspects of fruit-tree management, along with 55 batches of nurserymen training. Approximately 20,000 farmers received training in fruit production through his initiatives.
When the research of a university professor becomes practical knowledge in the hands of thousands of farmers, scientific achievement reaches its most meaningful form.
International Research and Development Activities
Professor Rahim’s research and development activities have not been confined to Bangladesh. His biography records his involvement in projects and research activities associated with organisations including FAO, WorldFish, USAID, Helen Keller International, BRAC, CNFA, Winrock International, Biodiversity International, and the AAS–WorldFish CGIAR Consortium.
His research has covered irrigation water markets, nutrition, agricultural value chains, marketing, safe production of mangoes and other fruits, agricultural input marketing and distribution, and safe crop production.
He was also involved in USAID-funded work examining the impacts of nutrition and poverty in the hill and haor regions of Bangladesh.
These diverse activities demonstrate that, to Professor Rahim, agriculture was never merely the science of crop production. It was an integrated science encompassing food, nutrition, economics, biodiversity, markets, and human well-being.
A Career Enriched by National and International Recognition
Professor Dr. M. A. Rahim’s contributions have been recognised repeatedly at both national and international levels.
Among the notable honours mentioned in his biography are:
- Bangladesh Prime Minister Gold Medal in 2004 for Fruit Tree Plantation;
- Prime Minister Gold Medals in 2012 and 2013 for research contributing to the nutritional and food security of the rural poor of Bangladesh;
- Mother Teresa Gold Medal in 2007 from the Mother Teresa Research Foundation;
- Recognition in 2007 from the Indian Society for Horticultural Science for outstanding contributions to horticulture and food security;
- Pro-Oxfam Award in 2011 from Oxfam-Bangladesh;
- Helen Keller Gold Medal in 2011 from the Helen Keller Research Foundation;
- Recognition under the Norman Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Programme in 2008;
- Awards from universities in Indonesia and Malaysia;
- Gold Medal from the Bangladesh Academy of Agriculture (BAAG);
- Recognition from the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS); and
- Above all, the Independence Award 2026.
His biography further notes that he has received more than 60 other awards and recognitions from universities, scientific organisations, agricultural technology organisations, and service groups in Bangladesh.
The Independence Award—State Recognition of a Lifetime of Service
The Independence Award is Bangladesh’s highest civilian honour. Professor Dr. M. A. Rahim’s receipt of this prestigious state recognition in 2026 therefore represents more than an honour bestowed upon one individual. It is also recognition of Bangladesh’s agricultural science, horticulture, fruit research, germplasm conservation, and farmer-oriented research.
For decades, he collected genetic resources of fruits from across the country, conserved thousands of mother plants, developed hundreds of highly trained researchers, and helped take scientific knowledge and technologies to thousands of farmers.
The country’s highest civilian honour is therefore a fitting recognition of a lifetime devoted to science, agriculture, and people.

Writing about Professor Dr. M. A. Rahim cannot, for me, be simply an exercise in documenting the biography of an agricultural scientist. He was directly my teacher and the supervisor of my PhD research.
From him, I learned far more than academic knowledge and research methodology. I learned how a researcher should identify a problem, how deeply one must examine evidence, and, most importantly, how knowledge should ultimately be used for the welfare of people.
To me, he is far more than a teacher or research supervisor.
He is one of the greatest people in my life—my teacher, mentor, guide, and an enduring source of inspiration.
A teacher’s greatest success is realised when his students carry forward the knowledge and values they have received and use them for the benefit of future generations. Hundreds of Professor Rahim’s students are doing exactly that today in Bangladesh and around the world. I am proud to be one of his students and a small part of that extraordinary legacy.
His Legacy Will Live On from Generation to Generation
The life of Professor Dr. M. A. Rahim teaches us that agricultural science is not merely a science practised in laboratories—it is a science of human life and human welfare.
Conserving a disappearing fruit variety, identifying a superior mother plant, developing a young student into a researcher, or teaching a farmer the correct production technology—all are acts of building a nation’s future.
Whenever a new generation of scientists conducts research using the germplasm collections he helped establish, whenever trees selected and propagated through his work bear fruit in farmers’ orchards, and whenever one of his students mentors another young researcher, his work and philosophy will live again.
The Independence Award is the state’s recognition of his extraordinary contribution. Yet perhaps his greatest reward lies in the countless fruit trees growing across the soil of Bangladesh, the smiles of thousands of farmers, and the hundreds of researchers and students he has nurtured.
Professor Dr. M. A. Rahim is therefore not merely the name of an Independence Award-winning agricultural scientist. He represents a remarkable chapter in Bangladesh’s history of fruit research and germplasm conservation, a pioneer of farmer-oriented agricultural research, and, to countless students, a teacher who became an institution in his own right.
A Personal Tribute
“Sir, greater than the degree I earned under your supervision is the privilege of being your student. Your knowledge, integrity, hard work, dedication to research, and commitment to the farmers and people of this country will remain a lifelong source of inspiration to me. As your student, seeing you honoured with the Independence Award fills me with immense joy and pride. Through your work and through the people you have nurtured, you will continue to live on from generation to generation.”
