Broilers Need Less Feed, but Are Farmers Earning More?

Why feed efficiency must be considered alongside sale age, production costs and meat safety

A research-based report by agricultural journalist Dr. Bayezid Moral

During my 26 years of agricultural journalism, I have seen and learned through field visits that faster growth in chickens does not necessarily mean higher profits for farmers. Birds may grow well and require comparatively less feed, yet farmers may still find that the money left after selling them falls short of their expectations.

Profit depends on more than feed consumption and body weight. Chick prices, feed prices, mortality, electricity, labour, treatment, borrowing costs and the market price on the day of sale all determine a farmer’s actual earnings.

An important aspect of this reality emerged in the presentation abstract for the international technical seminar organised by the World’s Poultry Science Association–Bangladesh Branch on 3 October 2026.

Md. Zahidul Islam, Director and CEO of Bangla-UK Agro Products Ltd., examined the relationship between broiler feed conversion efficiency, genetic potential, meat quality and profitability. His central argument was clear: the lowest feed conversion ratio does not necessarily deliver the highest profit.

This message matters to farmers because turning good production performance into profit requires an understanding of the farm’s full income and expenditure.

What Does Feed Conversion Ratio Tell Us?

Feed conversion ratio, commonly known as FCR, indicates how much feed is required to produce a given amount of body weight or weight gain, depending on the calculation method.

For example, using the same calculation method, an FCR of 1.30 indicates approximately 1.30 kilograms of feed per kilogram of weight produced. An FCR of 1.40 indicates approximately 1.40 kilograms of feed.

At comparable ages, weights and management conditions, a lower FCR is a positive sign of feed efficiency. However, comparisons between birds of different ages or between different farms must also consider mortality, feed wastage and calculation methods.

According to Md. Zahidul Islam’s presentation abstract, Bangladesh’s broiler industry has improved FCR by approximately 0.55 points over about 25 years. Some leading farms now report FCR figures between 1.30 and 1.40. These are figures cited in his presentation and should not be treated as the national average for all farms.

His question is whether these gains in feed efficiency have translated into comparable improvements in farmer profitability and meat quality.

Sell at 28 Days or Keep the Birds Longer?

The presentation abstract refers to a commercial cost analysis of four production scenarios. It suggests that, under certain conditions, birds sold at 35 days with an FCR of 1.40 can generate a higher annual return per shed than birds sold at 28 days with an FCR of 1.30.

At first, this may seem surprising. How can birds that require more feed produce a higher return?

The explanation is that the additional days may increase saleable body weight. Chick purchase costs and some costs associated with starting a flock can then be spread across more kilograms of output. Where suitable markets exist, larger birds may also generate additional value through greater processed meat and breast meat output.

However, keeping broilers for 35 days does not guarantee higher profits on every farm. The additional seven days involve more feed, labour, electricity and exposure to disease risks. They also keep the shed occupied for longer, potentially changing the number of production cycles possible in a year.

The full cost tables behind the presentation were not available for this report. Farmers should therefore calculate the likely outcome using their own local data before applying its findings.

The practical question is whether the additional revenue from keeping birds longer will exceed the additional costs and risks.

Consider Annual Profit Alongside Profit per Bird

A profitable flock followed by a major loss in the next flock does not create a stable farming business. Likewise, keeping birds longer to increase profit from one flock may reduce the number of flocks that can be raised during the year.

Farmers therefore need to maintain three calculations:

  1. Profit per bird.
  2. Total production cost per kilogram of saleable live weight.
  3. Annual profit from the shed after deducting all costs.

Leaving out the value of the farmer’s own labour, depreciation of the poultry house and loan interest can make profits appear higher than they actually are.

Actual production cost per kilogram = Total flock cost ÷ Total saleable live weight.

The money spent on chicks, feed and treatment for birds that die must also remain in the total cost calculation. Ultimately, those expenses must be recovered through the sale of the surviving birds.

Reducing Feed Costs Is Different from Reducing Nutrition

Feed is a major expense in broiler production, so farmers naturally want to reduce feed costs. However, cheaper feed that fails to provide adequate nutrition may slow growth. Birds may then need to remain on the farm longer, increasing other expenses.

International broiler management guidance also emphasises designing finisher feed to optimise financial returns for the type of product being produced. Farmers therefore need to assess what a feed delivers, alongside its price per bag.

Md. Zahidul Islam’s abstract similarly highlights reducing costs through a carefully balanced nutritional programme. Weakening finisher feed to achieve short-term savings may reduce overall profit.

Practical steps include checking feed quality, storing feed in dry conditions, reducing wastage from feeders and regularly recording feed consumption and body weight.

Medicine Records Are Essential for Safe Meat

The presentation recommends selling birds at around 35 days, providing appropriate finisher feed during the final seven days and observing the required medicine withdrawal periods.

One point needs to be clear: feeding finisher feed for seven days does not mean that the withdrawal period for every medicine has been completed.

A medicine withdrawal period is the prescribed waiting time between the final administration of a medicine and the collection of meat for food, allowing residues to remain within permitted limits. The required period depends on the medicine and its approved conditions of use.

Farmers must therefore follow veterinary advice and the medicine’s approved instructions. They should record which medicine was used, when the last dose was given and when the birds can be sold for slaughter.

Reaching 35 days of age alone does not establish that a bird is ready for sale. If the withdrawal period for a medicine has not ended, the farmer must wait until it has been completed.

Good Genetics Also Require Good Management

Buying chicks with strong growth potential does not automatically ensure that the farm will realise that potential. Temperature, ventilation, water quality, feed, litter conditions and stocking density all influence production performance.

Blaming feed alone for a poor FCR can be misleading. Equally, a good FCR does not establish that every aspect of farm management is satisfactory.

Farmers need regular information on feed consumption, body weight, mortality and the reasons for treatment. Without these records, it is difficult to identify problems or make informed decisions about improving profitability.

What Needs to Change to Improve Farmer Profitability?

The presentation highlights laboratory verification, improved housing, appropriate nutrition, contract farming and effective policy.

For these measures to work in practice, services must also reach small farmers. Complaints about feed and chick quality need impartial assessment. Contract farming arrangements should clearly define pricing, responsibility for quality and liability for losses. Farmers also need accessible market price information to support their selling decisions.

For me, the most important lesson from this discussion is that broiler farming success cannot be judged by rapid growth or low FCR alone. We must also ask whether farmers are recovering all their costs, receiving a fair return for their labour and supplying safe meat to consumers.

The goal should be a production system that combines efficient feed use, safe meat and sustainable farmer profitability.
