বিরতির পর টিউন ভ্যান ডি ব্রাক ‘Latest Genetic Update’ বিষয়ে এবং জ্যঁ-থমাস কুর্তোয়া ‘Strengthening Our Partnership in Bangladesh’ বিষয়ে বক্তব্য উপস্থাপন করেন।

- মুরগির জীবনক্ষমতা ও রোগসহনশীলতা;
- দীর্ঘদিন ধারাবাহিকভাবে ডিম দেওয়ার ক্ষমতা;
- ডিমের খোলসের শক্তি ও রং;
- অভ্যন্তরীণ ডিমের গুণমান;
- খাদ্য রূপান্তর দক্ষতা;
- সঠিক দৈহিক ওজন;
- পালকের আবরণ;
- আচরণ ও কল্যাণ;

রাত সোয়া ৮টায় জ্যঁ-থমাস কুর্তোয়া ‘Strengthening Our Partnership in Bangladesh’ বিষয়ে বক্তব্য দেন।

- Hendrix Genetics-এর Layers & Traditional Poultry বিভাগের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক পেলাইয়ো কাসানোভাস;
- বাংলাদেশে নেদারল্যান্ডস দূতাবাসের শার্জ দ্য অ্যাফেয়ার্স ইয়ানা ভ্যান ডার লিন্ডেন;
- বাংলাদেশ প্রাণিসম্পদ গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউটের অন্তর্বর্তী দায়িত্বপ্রাপ্ত মহাপরিচালক ড. শাকিলা ফারুক;

১. প্রতিটি বাণিজ্যিক লেয়ার জাতের স্থানীয় পরীক্ষার ফল প্রকাশ;
২. বাচ্চা থেকে উৎপাদন শেষ হওয়া পর্যন্ত ডিজিটাল ট্রেসেবিলিটি;
৩. হ্যাচারি ও পরিবেশকের বাধ্যতামূলক কারিগরি সেবা;
৪. বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠানের মাধ্যমে স্বাধীন কর্মদক্ষতা যাচাই;

Call for Genetic Advancement and Stronger Partnerships in Bangladesh’s Egg Industry
‘Bangladesh Egg Industry Partnership Summit 2026’ Held in Dhaka
Local and international experts emphasize extended laying cycles, improved egg quality, feed efficiency, disease resilience, and data-driven farm management
Dr. Bayezid Moral | Editor | AgricultureNews24.com
Poultry experts and policymakers have emphasized the importance of advanced genetics, quality chicks, balanced nutrition, biosecurity, data-driven farm management, and long-term cooperation between local and international organizations to make Bangladesh’s egg industry more productive, sustainable, and profitable.
These issues were highlighted at the “Bangladesh Egg Industry Partnership Summit 2026,” held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the Grand Ballroom on the 14th floor of Le Méridien Dhaka. The event was organized by Hendrix Genetics, an international animal breeding, genetics, and technology company. Government officials, researchers, breeders, hatchery operators, representatives of poultry companies, industry leaders, and international experts attended the summit.
The conference focused on the current state of Bangladesh’s egg industry, future market prospects, the latest genetic advances in laying hens, improvement of production efficiency, better farm-level management, and the strengthening of Hendrix Genetics’ partnerships in Bangladesh.
According to the information presented by the company, its goal is not merely to develop hens capable of producing more eggs. Hendrix Genetics also aims to breed layers that remain productive for longer periods, produce more high-quality eggs with less feed, maintain strong eggshell quality, achieve better livability, and adapt to different climates and production systems.
The Programme Begins with a Recitation from the Holy Qur’an
According to the programme schedule, the summit began at 5:30 pm with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an by Dr. Mehadi Hasan.
The welcome addresses were delivered by Thijs Hendrix, Founder, President and Honorary Chairman of Hendrix Genetics, and Pelayo Casanovas, Managing Director of Layers & Traditional Poultry at Hendrix Genetics.The welcome session highlighted the company’s global operations, the potential of Bangladesh’s egg industry, and the importance of building long-term relationships with local partners.
A central message from the organizers was that the true benefits of advanced genetics can be realized only when quality chicks are supported by appropriate nutrition, a suitable environment, proper healthcare, and sound farm management.Following the welcome session, Dr. Rafael Lera, a senior technical specialist at Hendrix Genetics, delivered a technical presentation on different aspects of layer management.
After the prayer and refreshment break, Teun van de Braak presented the “Latest Genetic Update,” while Jean-Thomas Courtois spoke on “Strengthening Our Partnership in Bangladesh.”
More Than a Century of Breeding Experience
The origins of Hendrix Genetics date back to 1923, when the Saazehof farm was established in the Netherlands. What began as a family-based agricultural enterprise gradually developed into an international animal breeding and genetics company. Hendrix Genetics was formally established in 2005 by bringing several breeding programmes together under a single organizational structure. The company now operates in more than 25 countries. In addition to laying hens, its genetic improvement programmes cover turkeys, coloured or traditional poultry, swine, salmon, trout, and shrimp.
The company works with the objective of using advanced genetics to help ensure a safe and sustainable supply of animal protein for the world’s growing population. Hendrix Genetics has more than a century of combined experience in layer breeding and genetics. The company emphasizes a regional approach, providing different breeds and management support according to the climate, housing system, egg colour and size preferences, market demand, and production conditions of each country.
Internationally Recognized Layer Brands
The major layer brands of Hendrix Genetics include ISA, Bovans, Dekalb, Hisex, Shaver, and Babcock. It also offers specialist layer breeds such as Warren, Azur, Noirans, and Olive.
Although these brands are owned by the same company, they are not all developed for the same market or production objective. Some lines are particularly well known for brown-egg production, while others are highly efficient producers of white eggs. Certain breeds are selected for extended laying cycles, feed efficiency, strong eggshells, high livability, or their ability to adapt to alternative housing systems and different climatic conditions. The brands ISA, Shaver, Hisex, Bovans, and Dekalb were prominently featured on the summit stage and in the presentations. Information was also presented on Sasso, the company’s coloured or traditional poultry brand. The Sasso breeding programme aims to develop high-quality, robust coloured chickens capable of performing under diverse environmental conditions. Its product objectives include superior performance, affordable meat production, acceptable feed conversion, good welfare characteristics, and a distinctive meat flavour preferred by consumers.
Such genetic programmes may be particularly relevant to Bangladesh, where there is strong demand for indigenous-looking and coloured chickens, especially in rural and semi-intensive production systems. Taste, meat texture, adaptability, and consumer preference often play an important role in this segment of the market.
Technical Presentation by Dr. Rafael Lera
Dr. Rafael Lera holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Zaragoza in Spain. According to the profile presented at the summit, he has been involved in the layer business since 1990 and has worked with Hendrix Genetics and the ISA Group since 1991.
He initially served as Technical Manager and later as General Manager of the company’s Spanish subsidiary responsible for the distribution of commercial layers. Since 2001, he has worked as a specialist in the Technical Service Department, providing support to customers in different regions of the world. He is currently a senior member of the Hendrix Genetics Layers Technical Service Core Team, supporting the company’s global technical operations. The central theme of his session concerned the practical management required to obtain the desired performance from laying hens with advanced genetic potential.
Simply purchasing chicks from a high-performing breed does not guarantee maximum egg production. The quality of day-old chicks, brooding temperature, early feed and water intake, age-appropriate bodyweight, flock uniformity, lighting programmes, disease prevention, and nutrition during the laying period collectively determine the final result. Bodyweight development and flock uniformity during the pullet-rearing stage are particularly important. If pullets fail to achieve the recommended bodyweight for their age, the timing of sexual maturity, onset of egg production, peak production, egg weight, and persistency of lay may all be adversely affected.
Excessive bodyweight is also undesirable. Farmers must therefore monitor not only the average bodyweight of a flock but also its uniformity. A good average may conceal significant differences among individual birds if the flock is uneven. Heat stress remains one of the biggest challenges for layer production in Bangladesh’s hot and humid climate. When the temperature inside the poultry house rises, feed intake may decline. This can reduce egg production and egg weight, weaken shell quality, and increase mortality.
Effective ventilation, an uninterrupted supply of clean and cool drinking water, feeding during the cooler hours of the day, expert advice on the appropriate use of electrolytes, and proper control of house temperature are therefore essential. A layer’s genetic potential can only be expressed when its housing, nutrition, health, and management requirements are consistently met.
Latest Genetic Advances Presented by Teun van de Braak
At 7:15 pm, Teun van de Braak delivered his presentation on the “Latest Genetic Update.” His discussion focused on the concept of balanced breeding in modern layer genetics. In the past, the number of eggs produced by a hen was often treated as the dominant selection criterion. Modern poultry breeding, however, evaluates multiple characteristics at the same time.
These include:
- Livability and disease resilience;
- The ability to produce eggs consistently over an extended period;
- Eggshell strength and colour;
- Internal egg quality;
- Feed-conversion efficiency;
- Appropriate bodyweight;
- Feather cover;
- Behaviour and welfare;
- Adaptability to different housing systems and climatic conditions.
According to Hendrix Genetics, it was among the first breeding companies in the industry to test laying hens up to 100 weeks of age.
One of its breeding ambitions is to develop layers capable of producing 500 first-quality eggs per hen housed by 100 weeks of age. The company reports that this target is already being achieved in commercial operations in different parts of the world. However, the target of 500 eggs should not be regarded as a guaranteed result for every farm. Performance will vary according to chick quality, disease pressure, feed quality, housing conditions, management, environment, and biosecurity. Genetics provides the potential, but appropriate management is required to convert that potential into commercial production.
Furthermore, the total number of eggs alone does not provide a complete assessment of a layer’s performance. Livability, feed consumption, egg weight, shell strength, saleable egg output, and the production cost per dozen eggs must also be evaluated.
Genomic Selection and the Use of Technology
Modern breeding programmes no longer rely solely on physical appearance, pedigree records, or observed production performance. They also use information obtained directly from the bird’s genetic makeup. Hendrix Genetics has used genomic selection in its breeding programmes since 2010. The company maintains an in-house database containing information on individual birds included in its breeding programmes. Data are collected on egg production, feed intake, egg quality, livability, health, welfare, and other economically important traits.
It also maintains an in-house BioBank for storing tissue and blood samples from breeding stock. Barcoded samples are handled by automated systems and robots, reducing the risk of human error during processing. By analysing Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, commonly known as SNPs, at different locations across the genome, geneticists can estimate the breeding potential of a bird at an early age. This allows more accurate selection, shortens the generation interval, and can accelerate the rate of genetic improvement. The company also uses an automated machine called the “Eggxaminator” to examine the external quality of eggs. The machine uses vision-based technology to measure different egg characteristics consistently and objectively.
Automated assessment reduces subjectivity and errors associated with manual inspection and provides comparatively accurate data for research and breeding decisions. Such technologies demonstrate that modern genetic progress is increasingly driven by the integration of biological science, statistics, automation, and large-scale data analysis.
Jean-Thomas Courtois on Strengthening Partnerships in Bangladesh
At 8:15 pm, Jean-Thomas Courtois delivered a presentation titled “Strengthening Our Partnership in Bangladesh.” The presentation highlighted the importance of supply security, strengthening the capacity of local partners, providing technical support, and developing long-term business relationships in the Bangladeshi market.
A global supply map displayed at the event showed the company’s breeding and distribution footprint across countries and regions including Canada, the United States, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Russia, India, China, Japan, Indonesia, Brazil, South Africa, and New Zealand. The poultry genetics supply system is not the same as the supply chain for ordinary commercial products. It involves a long and sensitive biological chain comprising pedigree stock, grandparent stock, parent stock, hatching eggs, and commercial chicks.
Disease outbreaks, import restrictions, transportation disruptions, or production problems in one region can affect the supply of breeding stock and chicks at later stages of the chain. Bangladesh should therefore reduce excessive dependence on a single source. The country needs approved alternative sources, long-term demand forecasting, efficient management of local parent stock, and a secure supply system based on high health and disease-control standards. Another essential area of partnership is the transfer of practical management knowledge to farmers. Merely translating an international management guide is not enough. Practical guidelines should be adapted to Bangladesh’s temperature, humidity, available feed ingredients, housing systems, management capacity, and disease situation.
Local partners should be able to explain not only what the international standards recommend but also how those recommendations can be applied under Bangladeshi farm conditions.
Pelayo Casanovas’ International Experience
Pelayo Casanovas has served as Managing Director of Layers & Traditional Poultry at Hendrix Genetics since 2023. He holds a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, and a Master’s degree in Poultry Science from the University of Georgia in the United States. According to the profile displayed during the summit, he brings more than 20 years of international experience in poultry breeding.
Before joining Hendrix Genetics, he held a number of senior leadership positions at Cobb-Vantress in Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, China, and the United States. His most recent role there was Vice President for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region.
His remarks reflected the diversity of Asian poultry markets, the importance of products suited to local conditions, and the need for long-term partnerships. In a rapidly growing market such as Bangladesh, a sustainable relationship cannot be based solely on selling genetic products. It must also involve transferring technical knowledge, training employees, analysing farm data, and building the capacity of local partners to identify and solve production problems.
Participation of Distinguished Guests
According to the programme, distinguished guests were welcomed to the stage at 8:30 pm. They included:
- Pelayo Casanovas, Managing Director, Layers & Traditional Poultry, Hendrix Genetics;
- Jaana van der Linden, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bangladesh;
- Dr. Shakila Faruque, Director General with interim responsibility at the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute;
- Dr. Khalequzzaman, Director of the Department of Livestock Services;
- Mahabubur Rahaman, President of the Breeder Association of Bangladesh.
Their participation highlighted the importance of coordinated engagement among the government, research institutions, private entrepreneurs, breeder organizations, and international genetics companies in developing Bangladesh’s egg and poultry industries.
The challenges confronting the egg industry cannot be resolved through isolated initiatives. Alongside quality genetics, coordinated action is required in disease control, import policy, feed pricing, laboratory capacity, farm registration, market stability, and consumer confidence.
Research institutions can independently evaluate genetic performance under local conditions. Government agencies can establish health and quality standards. Breeders and hatcheries can ensure the supply of quality chicks. Farmers can maintain accurate records and follow scientific management practices. Market actors can help build a fair and transparent pricing system. Progress will depend on how effectively these responsibilities are coordinated.
New Opportunities for Digital Farm Management
Hendrix Genetics has introduced Eggsense Lite, a mobile-friendly digital application designed to support data-driven poultry management. The application allows farmers to record five core indicators: daily egg production, egg weight, bird bodyweight, mortality, and feed consumption. Data can be stored locally when an internet connection is unavailable and accessed or synchronized later. This feature may make the application suitable for farms in remote areas of Bangladesh where internet connectivity is inconsistent.
The stored information can be displayed through graphs, allowing farmers and technical personnel to identify declines in egg production, changes in feed consumption, bodyweight problems, or increasing mortality at an early stage. Many poultry farms in Bangladesh still lack regular and accurate recordkeeping. Without reliable records, it is difficult to determine the real cause of a health or production problem. When digital record systems are expanded, farmers, veterinarians, nutritionists, hatcheries, and researchers can assess the same data and make quicker, evidence-based decisions.
However, digital tools will produce useful results only when farmers enter accurate information consistently. Training, user-friendly Bangla-language interfaces, data security, affordability, and access to technical assistance will therefore be essential.
Important Lessons for Bangladesh’s Egg Industry
Several important lessons can be drawn from the summit.
First, the genetic potential of a commercial layer should be evaluated using actual results from local farms, not merely promotional claims about maximum egg production. Comparative information should include egg production at the same age, feed consumption, mortality, egg weight, shell quality, number of saleable eggs, and feed cost per dozen eggs.
Second, regular technical support must be available after chicks are delivered to the farm. If a hatchery or distributor considers its responsibility complete after selling chicks, the full potential of advanced genetics will not be realized.
Third, Bangladesh needs a local performance database suitable for its climate and production conditions. Performance should be analysed according to region, season, housing type, disease exposure, feed quality, and management system. Such information would help farmers select layer breeds on the basis of evidence rather than advertising alone.
Fourth, disease prevention and biosecurity must be strengthened alongside the introduction of improved genetics. Weak control of avian influenza, Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis, and other major poultry diseases will prevent genetic progress from delivering the expected commercial benefits.
Fifth, a quality-based egg marketing and pricing system should be developed. Farmers have little incentive to invest in quality improvement if they receive no additional value for strong and clean shells, safe production, consistent weight, traceability, and better internal egg quality.
Sixth, farmers need simple management guidelines in Bangla, digital recordkeeping systems, and regular training. International recommendations must be adapted to Bangladesh’s climate, locally available feed ingredients, housing conditions, and farm-management capacity.
The Relationship Between Genetics and Sustainable Production
The stated mission of Hendrix Genetics is to help address the global food challenge through high-quality animal genetics. According to the company, selecting more efficient birds in each new generation can reduce the resources required for feed, housing, and transportation. Improved biological efficiency can also help reduce the carbon footprint associated with food production.
An extended laying cycle is particularly important for sustainability. If a layer flock can remain healthy and continue producing high-quality eggs for a longer period, farmers do not need to replace it as frequently with new pullets. This reduces the resources required for chick production, rearing, feed, transportation, and housing. Nevertheless, sustainable breeding must also give appropriate importance to poultry health and welfare, disease resilience, feather condition, bone strength, and behavioural characteristics.
An increase in the number of eggs cannot be considered sustainable if it is achieved at the expense of the bird’s health, welfare, or ability to remain productive. The most valuable genetic progress is therefore not simply “more production,” but balanced improvement across productivity, quality, efficiency, health, and welfare.
Observations and Recommendations by Dr. Bayezid Moral
Although demand for eggs is increasing in Bangladesh, farmers’ profitability remains unstable. Rising feed prices, sudden declines in egg prices, disease outbreaks, poor-quality chicks, and abnormal market fluctuations repeatedly cause financial losses to producers. Advanced genetics should therefore not be viewed as an isolated technology. To obtain the maximum benefit from Hendrix Genetics or any other international genetics company operating in Bangladesh, five initiatives are essential:
- Publication of local trial results for every commercial layer breed;
- Digital traceability from chick placement to the end of the laying cycle;
- Mandatory technical support from hatcheries and distributors;
- Independent performance evaluation by universities and research institutions;
- Establishment of a rational relationship between egg-production costs and market prices.
The period over which a genetic performance claim is measured must also be clearly stated. For example, it is necessary to specify the age up to which the total number of eggs per hen was calculated, the mortality rate during that period, the quantity of feed consumed, and the number of first-quality saleable eggs produced.
Without such information, the claim that a layer produces “more eggs” does not constitute a complete scientific or commercial evaluation. A breed that produces a high number of eggs but requires excessive feed, suffers higher mortality, or produces a large proportion of cracked and downgraded eggs may not necessarily be the most profitable choice for farmers. Performance must therefore be judged on the basis of overall economic return rather than egg numbers alone.
A Renewed Message of Partnership
During the final phase of the summit, a raffle draw was conducted by Teun van de Braak and Jean-Thomas Courtois. Md. Mahiuddin later delivered the vote of thanks. The programme concluded with a group photograph, followed by dinner at 9:30 pm.
The “Bangladesh Egg Industry Partnership Summit 2026” was more than a corporate or technical event. It created an important platform for dialogue among international experts, local industry representatives, researchers, and policymakers regarding the future of Bangladesh’s egg industry. To move the industry forward, Bangladesh needs not only improved breeds but also science-based management, skilled human resources, reliable data, effective biosecurity, and a farmer-friendly marketing system.
If international genetic advances are properly adapted to Bangladesh’s production realities, the country can reduce production costs, improve egg quality, enhance farm profitability, and ensure a safer and more affordable supply of animal protein for consumers. The most important message of the summit is that the future of the egg industry is not simply a competition to produce the highest number of eggs.
Its future depends on extended and sustainable production, feed efficiency, poultry health and welfare, egg quality, data-driven decision-making, transparent performance evaluation, and partnerships built on mutual trust.
